Fresh Start

For Clinicians

Understanding and recognising addiction and substance use disorders in patients is critical. The health care professional’s support is crucial to making a positive change and beginning recovery. Fresh Start can provide you with referral forms to our services, and information and advice about how we can work together to ensure your patients receive the best outcomes for their recovery.

  • Increased aggression or irritability
  • Changes in attitude/personality
  • Lethargy
  • Depression
  • Sudden changes in a social network
  • Dramatic changes in habits and/or priorities
  • Involvement in criminal activity
  • Lack of control, or inability to stay away from a substance or behaviour

If your patient presents with these signs or symptoms it may be useful to conduct a DSM-5 Checklist and utilise script check WA in-case of prescription drug misuse.

Once you have listened and taken your patient’s history, you may want to ask if they would like addiction recovery treatment or to attend a specialised program. You may choose to suggest additional supports such as counselling or the support of an addiction medicine specialist to supplement the care you continue to provide.

If your patient expresses an interest in attending a recovery program, consider their ability to travel and the type of treatment and program that best suits them. At Fresh Start we use a range of unique pharmacotherapies and accompany the medical treatment with comprehensive mental health support and housing. We also offer a 26-week residential recovery program for men.
