Researchers at the University of Western Australia, in partnership with Fresh Start Recovery Programme, recently published the results from a randomised control cross-over trial, which assessed the use of a medication for benzodiazepine detoxification.

The study aimed to assess whether there could be any potential for the detoxification medication to cause anxiety. Results showed that it was unlikely that any significant anxiety was caused by the detoxification medication when compared to placebo. Additionally, there was some evidence to suggest that the medication may actually reduce anxiety, additionally, the researchers found that anxiety following the detoxification process (approximately 30 days after treatment) was significantly reduced compared to baseline, which suggests some anti-anxiety properties.
